BARBÓRKA

Barbórka, Miners’ Day - a traditional mining festival, celebrated in Poland on December 4th, for St. Barbara from Nicomedia, patron of good death and hard work. In addition to miners, Barbórka is also celebrated by geologists and other people engaged in fossil fuel exploration professions.

In the mining tradition, Barbórka begins with a morning solemn mass in the church or in the hall, at the figure of St. Barbara. Then the mining orchestra marches playing, among others his anthem in the settlements inhabited by miners and their families and under the houses of the management. Gala academies and meetings are held. On the occasion of this day, there are also organized: concerts, artistic performances, games and balls, in which entire mining families participate.
