Labor Day

Labor Day

International Labour Day, or International Labour Solidarity Day, is an annual celebration on 1 May to commemorate and recognise the achievements of the working class. In Poland, this day is a statutory holiday. The holiday was established in 1889 at the first congress of the Second International Labour Congress, which took place in Paris.

It was supposed to commemorate the massacre of workers that took place in 1886 in Chicago (United States) during a demonstration against poor working conditions and especially against excessive working hours. In Poland, the first celebration of Labour Day took place as early as 1890 and was organized (against the partitioners) by activists of the Social-Revolutionary Proletariat Party. Later celebrations of the holiday were also initiated mainly by socialist parties and organizations.
After 1989 the celebration of Labour Day became less popular, which probably results not from an aversion to the basic idea of the holiday, but rather to the political and ideological environment associated with it.

On the occasion of Labour Day, I wish every working person a rest on this day ;)

Easter

Easter

Wielkanoc, Easter Bunny, Jajko, Pisanki, Wesołych Świąt

In 325, during the Council of Nice, it was agreed that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first spring full moon. It is the Paschal full moon and falls after 21 March. Easter therefore falls between 22 March and 25 April.

Today, Easter is connected with many folk traditions and customs. Easter breakfasts are still alive. Easter eggs, holy food and beautiful Easter palms are created. The popularity of the so called 'śmigus-dyngus' is not decreasing.

Liturgical Easter begins with Easter Eve, on Saturday after dawn. The solemn Resurrection procession takes place, depending on the region, around midnight or at dawn on Sunday.
In Poland, traditionally, both Easter days - Sunday and Monday - are statutory holidays. In some countries the celebration of Easter is slightly different. For example, in Spain the most important period is Semana Santa, which is the native Holy Week. This is when huge night processions take place all over the country, remembering the passion of Christ. The Spaniards do not go to work so rather on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Wielkanoc, Koszyczek, Tradycja, Święconka

And here I'm sending a video of how you can decorate your Easter basket in a cool way.

Fat Thursday

Fat Thursday

Fat Thursday is on February 20 (in 2020).
Actually in Poland it’s called Fat Thursday.

The tradition of celebrating Fat Thursday in Poland began in the 17th century.
Fat Thursday begins the last week of the carnival.
We eat donuts or angel wings on that day, because in the Middle Ages we had to keep fasting.
In these days you can't eat products from animals: eggs, milk, cheese, lard, meat, etc. Therefore, people ate before him not to waste food.
On the Fat Thursday there are competitions in eating donuts! Whoever eats more donuts in the shortest possible time wins!

The best recipe for donuts below.

             Bon Appetit!

Bóg się rodzi - the Nativity Play

Bóg się rodzi - the Nativity Play

Maja, class VI "A report of the Nativity Play":

The Nativity Play at our school took place on 18th December 2019 and it was staged by class "0" , five-year-olds and the kindergarten.  The performance started with a carol "The silence of the night". Then the children in their poems told the guests about the path of Joseph and Mary. Then some girls dressed up as angels entered the stage and woke up shepherds with a carol "Let's all go to the stable". Next, the shepherds sang a carol "The shepherds came to Bethlehem" and gave Jesus their gifts. When the Three Kings arrived, they offered myrrh, incense and gold. Mary and Joseph thanked the newcomers for the gifts. The ceremony ended with a carol "Silent Night".
I like these performances very much and I think they are needed.

Małgosia, class VII:
On the 19th December 2019, at 11:00 am.  the Nativity Play was performed by students form classes IV-VIII. The performance presented how people celebrate Christmas. It showed that generally people don't understand the meaning of Christmas Eve.

There was a family who lived in Poland. They were preparing for Christmas Eve. A daughter, dad and mum sat at the table. The daughter was unpacking presents, they were eating traditional dishes. They weren't saying anything or laughing.

There is a custom that during the solemn Christmas Eve supper one spare place  at the table is left for an unexpected guest. But for the parents it was only a meaningless tradition, so when a homeless man knocked at their door, they didn't let him in.
A moment later an ambulance arrived and the doctor informed the family that he wanted to call the police, because they didn't help the man and he has nearly frozen to death.

Finally, the parents undrestood  the real meaning of Christmas and made up for their mistake.

It was an excellent performance and it was rewarded with great applause by our school community and the invited guests.

Łukasz, class VII

On December 19, 2019, the Nativity Play took place at Kornel Makuszyński's school. The nativity scenes were not typical because they were not exactly nativity scenes etc. When all the guests arrived, the ceremony began. The head of the school announced the ceremony.

It started when  the family began to prepare the Christmas table. When Christmas Eve came, the family sat down at the table. Suddenly the doorbell rang, the housekeeper opened the door and announced that there was a homeless man. The parents ordered to keep him outy even though they had a free place for a wanderer.

The performance also featured a donkey with whom the daughter talked. After breaking the wafers, the family heard an ambulance signal and a moment later a doctor at the door the door. The doctor said that the person they did not want to receive almost died not far away from their home.
At the end of the performance all the actors came to the stage.

St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on the 6th of December.
This day celebrates the 4th-century saint who sold all that he had and gave the money to the poor.
The 6th of December was the day of his death.

St. Nicholas Day includes a tradition of leaving gifts in the shoes or stockings. Children leaves their shoes in the evening because they hope to find a small treat in them in the morning.
People usually exchange small gifts like sweets or small toys with their friends and families.

Children like this day because they can get some presents. In Poland naughty children get a stick instead of a nice gift.
At schools there are often different activities such as gift-giving or feasts.

St. Andrew's Day

St. Andrew's Day

Wróżba, Andrzejki, Lanie Wosku, Symbol, Wróżby, Świece

The night from 29 to 30 November is the eve of St. Andrew's Day, from which the name of the evening was taken. According to old beliefs, that night was always accompanied by a mysterious aura, and fortune-telling, especially those concerning love, had power.

According to the Gospel, St. Andrew was the first of 12 called apostles. He was also the first to preach the Gospel in Byzantium, which is why history attributed him the name of the first Constantinople bishop. He was sentenced to martyrdom for his teachings. He is the patron saint of Slavic nations.

To this day, historians have not established the exact genealogy of Andrew's andrzejekas. It is believed that Andrew's Andrew divination was born in ancient Greece.

And here's a video dedicated to the day!!!

World Children's Day

World Children's Day

Today at our school we celebrated the World Children's Day. In class we talked about our rights and to appreciate the fact that we have our own rights because not in every country children can go to school, live in peace with others. We talked about different topics related to this, then we were divided into four groups and each team had a different task about children's rights, e.g. what can harm children who do not have rights like us, what can be done to change those rights in other countries. Each team gave their views on different topics related to this.
Finally, with the whole class, we summarized it in order to appreciate what we have because others may never feel that they have their own opinion.

World Children's Rights Day, which takes place on 20 November, is an important day for children all over the world. It reminds us that, as an independent subject, children have their own rights and needs, and as a mentally and physically immature person, they should be surrounded by caring care and special legal protection. Every child has its own civil, social, cultural, political and economic rights. World Children's Rights Day reminds us of the need to respect their rights to life and development, their identity, freedom, dignity and personal integrity.

Children, like adults, shall have the right to freedom of thought, religion and conscience and the right to profess their own opinions and to associate themselves peacefully. They shall have the right to live with their families or to have contact with their parents in the event of separation. Every child should be legally protected from physical and psychological violence.

All Saints' Ball in Poland

All Saints' Ball in Poland

Hi everyone!
Welcome to our blog. Today we would like to write about celebrating All Saints' Day in the Primary School of Kornel Makuszyński in Gierlachów, Poland. Our Priest and PE teacher came up with this idea.

Here are reports by class VI students: Maja, Jaś and Kacper.

Jaś:
"On October 30th, the All Saints' Ball  took place in my school. On this day some students dressed up as Saints. Selected students from particular classes took part in a quiz about All Saints' Day. There was also a dance and some students' performance. There was fun and rewards."

 Maja:
"On October 30th our school celebrated All Saints' Day. At the beginning, Janek from class VI recited a poem "How to become a Saint?". Then, class VI sang a song "So big, so little". Next, Maja from class VI sang a song called "Something is holy". In the meantime, students dressed up as Saints presented their costumes. Among others, three people from class six dressed up: Daria as Saint Daria, Jan as Saint Francis and Wojciech as Saint Wojciech. At the end of the performance there was a quiz about Saints, consisting of three rounds. Each class was to choose one participant. At the end of each round, points were added. People who didn't know the answers dropped out. It turned out that the quiz was won by Łukasz from class VII. In my opinion, such celebrations are very cool and needed".

Kacper:
"On 30th October 2019, All Saints' Ball took place in our school. The whole school gathered at the ceremony. At the beginning, there was a performance of poems and songs, showing what day it was. Children dressed up as Holy Figures. Among them there were three students from my class. After the performance, there was a quiz. Each participant got a candy. Three winners received main prizes. Everyone was happy".

European Day of Foreign Languages

In 2001, the Council of Europe declared 26 September European Day of Languages.
The aim of this initiative is to show the linguistic and cultural diversity of our continent and to support the learning of foreign languages. Thanks to the knowledge of foreign languages, we have better access to knowledge and better opportunities to meet new people and make friends.

This year...
In English class we solved a quiz about Europe and talked about the importance of learning English. During Spanish lesson the students painted the flags of Spanish-speaking countries, they also learnt interesting facts about Spanish and the countries where this language is spoken. They also listened to Spanish songs.

This is a song dedicated to the Day of European Languages !!!
